Review
These "minor prophets" are anything but minor when judged by the depth of their thought and the influence they exerted on other literature, including the New Testament. They require, however, considerable skill to understand and to explain. To these books John Collins brings a historian's perspective, acute analytic gifts, and expository clarity. He is particularly qualified to explain the apocalyptic and "early apocalyptic" features of the books, which have often baffled earlier interpreters. Richard Clifford, SJ, Professor of Old Testament, Boston CollegeJoel, Obadiah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, John J. Collins provides clear and accessible treatment of these prophetic books, ones that are often overlooked by readers of the Bible. Collins offers helpful commentary that shows the importance of these short prophetic works, which for the Christian Bible stand at the end of the Old Testament and signal many important themes for the New Testament. He also does a great service to readers by discussing the major ideas in these biblical works, such as prophecy and apocalyptic as well as the symbolism of the messianic king and the Jerusalem Temple. This book is most highly recommended. Mark S. Smith, Skirball Professor of Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, New York University

The author, John Collins, is a professor at Yale and shares his expertise on the OT in a way that any high school graduate could understand. These 5 books represent teachings or preaching from minor prophets of ancient Israel and their words may still provide guidance for living today in the year 2014, some 2500 years later. Collins provides a short introduction (3 - 8 pgs.) to each book, which set the stage with helpful background material (date, historical context, structure, themes) and then comments on the text delving into matters such as symbolism, apocalyptic thought, the relation of prophecy to priestly ritual or whatever issue of meaning arises from the particular text. The aim is to assist you in a general grasp of what each book is about. The Biblical text appears at the top of the page, marked by chapter and verse, and is taken from 'The New American Bible' (2010), a Catholic translation which is certainly reliable.
Has been a wonderful study. There are six of us meeting on Monday nights and we all love it.
