There are some books that resonate on a spiritual level, engaging your soul as well as your mind. For me this is one of them. The Eastern orthodox iconography is intriguing and complementary, but it is Mirabai Starr's reflections that speak directly to the heart. Loaded with uplifting prayers. In the preface Starr writes: "In a world struggling against senseless violence and growing economic disparity, Mary offers a feminine antidote to the poisons of poverty and war. She mediates the generational feud between the children of Abraham. Where society demands competition, Mary teaches cooperation. In place of mindless consumerism, she models compassionate service. She refuses to be defined as the passive, obedient handmaid of the Father. She is the radical, powerful, engaged Mother of the World." These are reasons why Mother Mary is honored by people of many faiths- she offers hope and love in the face of uncertainty and fear. I bought the hardcover version and it's one of my most treasured possessions (along with Queen of Angels. Highest recommendation.
Life changing. I flip to a different page each night before bed, as an opening to prayer. Every night, I happen to find of the perfect page for reflection. The poems are beyond gorgeous, they are authentic and speak the truth of our struggles in the modern world. This is a great book for contemplation and reflection. We are so lucky that Mirabai did this project. It is marvelous!
After buying a hardbound version for myself, I bought 2 more copies in softbound for friends. I would have purchased hardbound if it had been available at the original price. The icons are exquisitely painted. My experience is that many of them drew me into the Mystery, as icons are meant to do. The verses provide poetic interpretations that the reader can use to discover his or her own meanings.
The book Mother of God Similar to Fire is one of the most beautiful publications I've ever seen. It is a presentation of 51 icons painted (or written, as they say) by Fr. William Hart McNichols. Each icon is moving, captivating, and is literally a doorway into heaven as you sit and allow it to lead you into prayer. It is difficult for me to pick a favorite -- but if I had to, I would pick the Mother of God Similar to Fire icon itself, actually.As if that were not enough, with each icon is a prayer by the writer Mirabai Starr. Each one is very, very lovely. The advertisement I had seen for this book stated that these were "poems," and they certainly are. But, as fine as they are, they transcend that genre. I had read Starr before (in her work on John of the Cross) and had enjoyed the material. With this book, I'm just blown away. I particularly liked the work on page 49, where she says, "Mother of Mercy, if I stay awake all night, vigilant and grateful, will you drop your protective veil over my vulnerable heart?" Isn't that lovely?So, here we have beautiful icons with lovely poems/prayers on the facing pages. This book is a treasure. I recommend it without reservation to anyone who loves beautiful paintings/icons, lovely marian poetry, or beautiful devotional icons and text.
Mother of God Similar to Fire is a wonderful instrument for deepening one's appreciation and love of Mary, Mother of God and our Mother. I could sit with the icons alone and move inward, but the prayer poems associated with each icon are so creative and moving that I was drawn further in and achieved my goal to know Mary better and love her more. This book has been a blessing for me.

I use McNichols' rendering of icons as an iconographer as they speak to the present age with beauty, simplicity, and reverence. Mirabai's prayers add another layer of depth to them
