The book 1941: The America That Went to War by William M. Christie is a hidden gem. It gives detailed, descriptive insight into life in the United States in the year 1941, a year of major transition between the Great Depression of the 1930s and World War II. The research is superb, and the writing is clear and concise. Mr. Christie identifies in an informative, very readable way the primary issues discussed by Americans and the mood of the country in 1941, especially as it related to the war in Europe that was currently underway. He covered a broad range of topics, twelve in all, including politics, poplar entertainment, sports, leisure time and travel, war preparedness, and home life. I liked the way he presented the twelve chapters as thematic vignettes and not as a sequential narrative of events. He identified broad themes based on an event or activity associated with any one of the twelve months of 1941, and then used it to discuss material associated with that theme. For instance, in February, the Academy Awards are presented, and he used the month of February to present the popular entertainment chapter. The beginning of July is the approximate mid-point of the major league baseball season and he uses the July chapter to discuss sports. Of course, the December chapter is focused on the beginning of World War II because of the surprise attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor on December 7 that started World War II for the United States.Being a baseball fan, I first went to July to read about Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees and his 56-game hitting streak that occurred in the 1941 season. I also wanted to read about Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox and his quest to achieve a 0.400 batting average for the season. Mr. Christie talks about both of these milestones. Whether Williams would do it or not was not resolved until the last day of the baseball season with a doubleheader with the Philadelphia A’s. Mr. Christie goes into wonderful detail as to what was said to Williams as he stepped to the plate for the first time that day by the home plate umpire and also the A’s catcher that you do not want to miss. Spoiler alert - Williams for the day went six for eight and raised his final batting average to 0.4057, rounded to 0.406 for the year. No one has hit 0.400 since then, and no one has broken DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak either. My mother-in-law Jean also read this book and she loved it. Jean was born in 1922 and after graduating from high school, she got her first job in January 1941 as a payroll clerk at a steel fabrication plant in Ohio. Today, at 96 years of age Jean’s memory is still remarkably clear, and she told me that 1941: The America That Went to War was very accurate and brought back so many memories as she read the book that in some ways it was like she was living that part of her life over again. She found nothing to dispute in this book. She also liked the way the book was organized and thought Mr. Christie was an excellent writer. I should point out that Jean has been an avid book reader all her life so coming from her that is quite a compliment.I heartily recommend this readable book to anyone who would like to know America and Americans just before World War II, and what our country was like in that very special year of 1941. It is a real treat. One final thought, Mr. Christie, if you are listening, I have the title to your next book. It is 1946: The America That Returned From War.

This is a fascinating book that is extremely well written with years of research involved. The title says a lot about the content of the book. I would definitely suggest it as a "must read". To quote Victor Brooks on the back cover of the book "The year 1941 was the dividing line between the America of yesterday and the America of tomorrow. William M. Christie has captured the essence of this twelve-month transition in all of its excitement, from Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak to the shock of Pearl Harbor. A must-read for World War II and general history buffs. Informative and entertaining."

I completely enjoyed how the book was presented in a monthly way, rather than by simply employing chapters. I highly recommend this book.

1941: The America That Went to War by William Christie is a well-researched and cleverly presented glimpse at the specific period just before America's entry into the war.The book is arranged thematically, yet presented as a calendar of sorts. Each month highlights an event that occurred that month in one of twelve topical areas, then uses that chapter to expand on that theme. This both walks the reader through the year while going into more detail about each topic. While there are plenty of books that discuss the American home front during the war, usually with reference to what was different from before the war, the emphasis is on the wartime home front. Pre-war is used to highlight changes so examples may well be cited from any time from the mid-1930s until December 1941. This book is about a very specific time, the year preceding the US entry. As such it is a better glimpse of pre-war America than the comparative books. While very well researched this is not an academic volume so is accessible to anyone with an interest in the period. This is that wonderful blend of historically rigorous while being more of a narrative than an academic argument. If you have read some books about the war itself, both military and home front, then this book will drive home some of the points those other books likely touched on.Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via Edelweiss.

This is a great book to see what life was really like in the United States as the nation was on the brink of WWII. It's an enjoyable read providing a deep dive into realities of the culture that everyone took for granted then but are so interesting to look back at now. It makes me wonder what people in 70 years would think of our pastimes, obsessions, politics, and culture. Most histories about that era focus on the factors that were directly involved in the war itself - but this gives us a story of America.
